MRFs general information
Here’s some information intended to give you answers to initial/start-up questions.

* Building sizes allow for adequate incoming and recovered product storage
** Excludes building acquisition/construction and planning
For ideas on sorting numbers and prices, please contact us with details of your MRF project and we can help. Click here for Contacts page
Before building a MRF you also need to consider:
- Building/Land Acquisition: We’ll give you the exact footprint needed. Sourcing the building/land will be down to you
- Planning Permission: You will need to determine whether you need planning permission and to acquire it as necessary
- Waste License: You will need to apply for this
- Power: We’ll give you the power requirements of the MRF. You will need to ensure the building has sufficient power
- MRF Captial budget: We can build to any budget. You will need to identify a budget for the equipment
- Interest on loans: You will need to allow for this in your operating costs>
- Sorting staff: We can advise you on sorting levels. You will need to allow for their costs in your operating costs
- MRF Running costs: We can advise you on running costs. You will need to allow for these in your operating costs (electricity, maintenance, cleaning, servicing, parts, consumables etc)
- Ancilliary equipment: We can advise you what vehicles you will need. Sourcing them will be down to you
- Incoming Materials: You will have to arrange delivery/deliver these to the MRF
- Markets: You will need to identify your end markets for the recovered products
What we need from you in order to make a proposal:
- A definition of the incoming material e.g. commingled or kerbside materials, skip waste, MSW etc.
- A throughput (the rate at which the incoming materials are to be loaded into the MRF) e.g. 10 tonnes per hour or 32,000 tonnes per yea or 20 skips/40-foot trailers per day etc
- The intended operating hours/shift pattern e.g. 1 x 10-hour shift, 2 x 8-hour shifts, 24-hour working
- A list of the products you want to recover e.g. News, card, PET, ferrous, timber, aggregates (required purity rates are helpful too)
- A footprint e.g. 42m x 19m x 7.5m
- An idea on when you plan to start up the MRF
