O.Kay Engineering was founded in 1953 by Oates Kay, a qualified mechanical, electrical and water engineer from Lancashire.
During the war he served with the Air Ministry setting up spotter lights on local churches to guide in returning aircraft. Many of these lights are still in use today.
A keen inventor and designer, Oates started his own engineering business soon after the war focusing on the design and supply of salvage conveyors to Local Authorities.
Despite some tough early years, Oates often would return from his sales trips with recipes from hotel chefs or wines recommended by his customers. As the business improved, he bought himself a white Rover P5B which became his visiting trademark, along with his abundant good humour.
Since his death in 1975, the company has remained solely in the care of the Kay family who stick to Oates’s founding principle: “Every customer is important to us. Serve them well and they will return.”
